The Diversity Committee is excited to announce its first Book Club event of the new program year, The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead. The book tells the gripping story of Cora, a young slave who escapes a Georgia plantation and sets out for the underground railroad, which Whitehead transforms from metaphor to an actual underground railway. The book’s impressive credentials include a Pulitzer Prize, National Book Award, #1 NYT Bestseller, and Oprah’s Book Club pick. The book confronts readers with the harsh—and often horrific—realities of life as a young, female slave and calls us to reckon with the nation’s racial history. The book has also been made into an Amazon series by the same name that members are welcome to view in addition to, or in lieu of, reading the novel.

We hope you will join us on Friday, December 10, 2021, at 12:30pm for a virtual discussion of the book, its themes, and real-life takeaways for contemporary legal practice. Please RSVP by December 3, 2021. Directions for joining the Zoom meeting will be sent at a later date to registrants.

All attendees are invited to bring to the meeting their favorite passage, takeaway, or question from the book or web series!
